Help Morton win the Food Fight with your donations of non-perishable (and non-expired)
food items for local food pantries. Sounds like a messy fight, but this is a clean competition
with other libraries in the Mid-Hudson Library System.
With your help, we will beat last year’s winner Pine Plains, and all the rest!

From May 1st to May 31st, please bring food items to Morton for us to donate to the
Church of the Messiah and Dutch Reformed Church in Rhinebeck. If we donate the most,
we will get a certificate congratulating us (and you) for being the most generous library community.

We have a lot of May programs, and we suggest food as your admission price.
When you visit the library, simply put your non-perishable items in the containers.
If you have overdue fines on your record but food items in your hand, let’s talk!

Thanks for your help in this worthy fight!

The Morton Food Fight begins on May 1 and goes until May 31!

Memorial Day, fast approaching! We are planning our Summer Reading Program for young people, so contact us if you would like to encourage a young person in your life to keep reading over the summer — for fun! New York State has suggested a Dream Big theme this summer; for adults, they are promoting Between the Covers. We can help you with your summer reading, too, by giving you covered books and audiobooks, or E-reading material. We can even get you started with a Nook E-Reader, so come on in and get your summer reading underway.
Mark your calendar: Morton will be having a fundraising event that is really fun and hopefully raises lots of funds for the library. On Saturday, May 26th, we will be holding an art auction, offering art from some of our most talented area artists. It’s a great way to build or start your collection, and help Morton at the same time. Refreshments from The Rhinecliff and China Rose at 6:00 p.m., auction at 7:00 p.m. Invite your friends — it’s always a good time. Thanks for staying in touch with Morton!

LibriVox May 15, 201

In addition to the public domain e-books included in Overdrive, there is also a Website that gives you access to downloadable public domain audio files.
Think of Librivox as a supplement to the purchased digital audio collections Mid-Hudson libraries can access through Overdrive.2.

If you are looking for an obscure, public domain book on digital audio, chances are it’s on the website LibriVox. While the quality of the narrators on the OverDrive database is superior, consider this website as a source for classic works of books on audio. For instance, Charles Dickens’ Barnaby Rudge is available for download in individual chapters (or zipped in its entirety) for your computer or listening device.

Morton Memorial Library & Community House director, Joanne Meyer, has done a nice job in their newsletter to promote Hudson Valley Reads: “Many readers know what it’s like to enter the library and browse the shelves to discover something new and interesting to read. Well, through our Web site (morton.rhinecliff.lib.ny.us), you can discover a new way to browse. It’s called Hudson Valley Reads, produced by a service called NextReads. You can see what’s new, and you can also see connections to the entire MHLS catalog for new recommendations of older titles. You can sign up for e-newsletters on topics that interest you, or stretch yourself by subscribing to entirely new topics. Try Armchair Travel, or New York Times Bestsellers, or Mind and Body Fitness, or Science Fiction, or any of 20 more
categories. You can even choose to get continual updates automatically through what’s called an RSS feed. So, we librarians do like to help you personally with that service called Readers’ Advisory, but we also like to show you useful tools to DIY! Have fun!”
